Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Duty-Free Stores Save Over €200,000 with AI-Powered Theft Prevention Technology

The Airport Retail Association (ARA) at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has achieved a major milestone in loss prevention, saving over €200,000 in high-end merchandise by deploying cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology developed by Veesion.

Long plagued by theft challenges common to high-traffic retail environments, Schiphol’s duty-free stores have turned to AI to tackle the problem head-on. The solution came through a partnership with Veesion, a Paris-based technology company specializing in real-time shoplifting detection powered by behavioral analysis.

Theo Goldberg, General Manager of ARA, was initially cautious when introduced to the system by Ulbe Keegstra of TRSS, Veesion’s trusted partner in the Dutch market. However, a pilot test quickly proved the technology’s potential.

Within the first hour of activation:

• Veesion detected an attempted theft of perfumes valued at €5,500.

• Just 30 minutes later, it prevented the theft of 29 additional items worth over €2,500.

Following the successful trial, ARA scaled the implementation to over 150 security cameras across more than 20 retail locations within the airport. Since then, the AI system has helped reduce shrinkage by 40%, making it a key component of Schiphol’s retail security infrastructure.
